Term of Contract:

A grant outcome review is due approximately 18-20 months after decision. Occasionally large or complex projects may not be scheduled to be complete within two years of receipt of funds. In cases such as these, the Progress Report and Grant Outcome Review timelines are adjusted to better align with anticipated project completion.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Foundation accepts grant requests from nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations.

Organizations that have previously applied are asked not to re-approach the Longwood Foundation with a funding request within two years of a previous request, regardless of whether the proposal was approved or declined.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Since no preparatory pre-meetings will be offered ahead of the summer or fall cycles, the Longwood Foundation offered five Zoom Q&A sessions the week of May 11th to address questions related to the summer grant cycle. Additional sessions for the fall cycle will be offered in August (exact dates to be determined).

Participation neither improves nor harms an organization’s likelihood of receiving funding. A recording of one of the sessions is available at

Pre-Application Information:

The Longwood Foundation typically operates two grant cycles per year, with proposal deadlines of March 1 and September 1. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, an additional summer grant cycle has been added, with a deadline of June 5.

Summer Grant Cycle Timeline:
Q&A/Information Sessions: May 12, 13, 14
Guidelines & Application Released: May 20
Proposal Deadline: June 3
Proposal Evaluation/Calls with Applicants: June-August
Grant Decisions & Funding: September

Fall Grant Cycle Timeline:
Q&A/Information Sessions: August (dates TBD)
Guidelines & Application Released: July 31
Proposal Deadline: September 1
Proposal Evaluation/Calls with Applicants: September-November
Grant Decisions & Funding: December

Prior to beginning an application, organizations should visit Guidestar to either create a profile or review/update their current profile.

Prospective applicants may request a pre-meeting ahead of the submission of a proposal. During this meeting, organizations may update the Foundation on the planned request and ask questions pertinent to drafting the application. Note that this meeting is optional and requesting one neither improves nor harms an organization’s likelihood of receiving funding.

As part of the proposal evaluation, every organization submitting a request will be given a Zoom meeting to discuss the application. Please plan to include the organization’s leader and Board Chair in this. During these visits, Longwood Foundation staff will ask many questions about the request, the requesting organization, and the proposed impact of the application. Staff may email questions in advance, with nonprofits asked to respond either during or within two weeks of the meeting.

The Longwood Foundation Board of Trustees meets in May and November to make grant decisions for the respective cycles. Within two weeks of their meeting, every requesting organization will receive a 15-minute phone call in which the decision is shared, expected outcomes are confirmed (if a grant request is approved), or suggestions are provided
to strengthen the next request in two years’ time (if a proposal is declined).
