Grants to USA nonprofit organizations and universities for scholarly research on public policy issues that impact on the personal and economic liberties of the nation's citizens. Funding is intended to support scholarship resulting in the publication of policy papers, journal articles, and books. The Foundation will also fund public interest litigation and outreach initiatives.

Through its grant-making, the Searle Freedom Trust seeks to develop solutions to the country’s most important and challenging domestic policy issues. Funding is typically provided in the form of research grants, fellowships, and other types of targeted project support.

The Searle Freedom Trust also provides funding for public interest litigation and supports outreach to the public through a variety of forums, including sponsorship of research conferences and seminars, film and journalism projects, and new media initiatives.

With the Foundation’s assistance, university and think tank scholars investigate a wide range of issues, including:

- Tax and budget policy
- Cost-benefit analysis of regulatory practices and proposals
- The workings of the legal system
- Environmental policy
- Social welfare reform
- K-12 and higher education policy

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Searle Freedom Trust will not typically support the following:

- Building projects
- Individuals
- Organizations that are not nonprofit, charitable organizations
- Organizations that are primarily dependent upon government funds
- Capital campaigns
- Endowments

It is the Foundation’s policy not to support unspecified overhead costs associated with university research projects.

Pre-Application Information:

The board of the Searle Freedom Trust meets three times per year. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis, with the following deadlines for the Trust's meeting schedule: January 7 for the Spring meeting; April 22 for the Summer meeting; and August 22 for the Winter meeting.

Grant proposals should be submitted online.
