Grant Description

Grants of up to $15,000 to Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey nonprofit organizations to benefit underserved women and girls in eligible locations. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full proposal. Funding may be requested for project support and general operating support. The Foundation primarily funds organizations serving the Greater Philadelphia area or that have a national impact with a local connection.

The Valentine Foundation is a charitable foundation committed to funding organizations and programs that produce significant change in the social, economic, and political systems and institutions that impact the lives of women and girls in order to make those lives more equitable. The Trustees are interested in funding organizations and programs for girls and women who are systemically underserved.

Grant applicants have to demonstrate how their organization, or the program or project for which they are requesting a grant, will contribute to social change for women and girls through one (or more) of these Indicators of Social Change:

Shift in Definitions: The issue is defined differently in the community or society.
Shift in Engagement: People in the community or larger society are more engaged.
Shift in Policies: An institutional, organizational or legislative policy or practice has changed.
Current Position Maintained: Past gains have been maintained (in the face of backlash or resistance).

Ineligible

Programs that solely provide direct service to women and girls, but do not result in meaningful social change, fall outside the Valentine Foundation mission and will not be funded, since they do not meet the Foundation's social change criteria.

The Valentine Foundation does not fund the following:
- Organizations that are not determined to be a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Scholarships
- Endowments
- Capital campaigns
- International initiatives
- Individuals
- Religious organizations for religious purposes
- Political organizations for political purposes

Pre-Application Information

Foundation Grant Schedule:
- The Letter of Intent (LOI’s) open on June 30, 2023.
- The deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent for the 2023 Valentine Foundation grant cycle is August 31, 2023.
- If your LOI is selected, the full application is due November 3, 2023.
- The Valentine Foundation awards grants once a year by the end of November 2023.

Estimated Size of Grant

The maximum amount awarded is $15,000, with most grants in the range of $7,000–$10,000; for multi-year grants, the maximum is $15,000 a year for up to three years ($45,000).

Term of Contract

Applicants can apply for single year or multi-year grants. Multi-year grants will be awarded for a period of up to three consecutive years. Applicants who are applying for the first time are not eligible for multi-year funding.
