Deadline Date:

02/27/20 5:00 PM ET

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Awards ranging from $250 to $1,000 to USA, Canada, and International students in grades 6 through 12 for short videos that demonstrate environmental or human welfare issues caused by population growth. Videos must focus on one of the following three global issues: Sustaining Water Systems, Ensuring Economic Opportunities, and Improving Climate Resiliency. Entries must be a digital video, no more than 60 seconds in length. Videos must include information about how population growth impacts the issue and at least one idea for a sustainable solution.

  • Sustaining Water Systems: Agricultural pollution, aquifer depletion, sanitation infrastructure, waste disposal, modifying waterways (dams, levees), safe drinking water
  • Improving Climate Resiliency: Climate migrants, poor urban planning, extreme weather events, agricultural productivity, disease evolution, global inequity in climate adaptation
  • Ensuring Economic Opportunities: Gender wage gap, global wealth inequality, workers’ rights, poverty cycle, microfinance, green jobs

Number of Grants:

There will be twelve high school winners and six middle school winners. 50 cash prizes will be awarded to the best video in each state. Six cash prizes will be awarded to the best international video by world region (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, and South America).

Estimated Size of Grant:

High School Winners (for each category):
- First place: $1,000
- Second place: $500
- Honorable mentions (2): $250

Middle School (for each category):
- First place: $500
- Runner up: $250

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any middle or high school student (grade 6-12, or the international equivalent) is free to enter. Students may be located anywhere in the world.

This is a high school and middle school student contest, and therefore, all of the research, writing, and editing should be done by students. If you want a parent or teacher to act in your film or hold the camera while you act, that is fine. However, you are the director of your film and all content should be yours alone.

There is no limit to the number of students who can work on a video. However, the video must be entered under one name ONLY (the Lead Producer). Recognition and prizes will be given to the lead producer and all those listed as co-producers on the entry form.

All videos should be entered in digital format. The Foundation will not accept audio-only recordings or videos recorded on VHS tapes.

No copyrighted materials (music, images, etc.) may be used for this contest unless you own the copyright or have a license to use the material for this contest. Written permission must be obtained and provided upon request for all copyrighted material

Pre-Application Information:

All entries must be uploaded by 5:00 pm (eastern time, US) on Thursday, February 27, 2020.

Finalists from each global challenge area will be notified by Monday, April 13, 2020. Reminder: a finalist is not a winner. Being chosen as a finalist means that your video was voted into the Top Ten and will go on to be judged by a panel of experts. There will not be a general announcement of finalists.

All winners will be notified directly no later than Tuesday, May 5, 2020. A complete list of winners, along with the winning videos, will be posted at www.Worldof7Billion.org.

All information presented in the video must be properly cited, giving credit to the original source. If your video is chosen as a finalist, you will be required to submit a list of all sources used.
