Grants to USA and Latin America nonprofit organizations for programs to benefit residents in eligible countries. Applicants are required to submit a Letter of Inquiry prior to submitting a full application. Funding is intended to support projects in the areas of education, democratic governance, and sustainable resource management. Funding is also intended for projects focused on the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of Latin America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Program areas include:

  • Democratic Governance: Initial areas of interest include:
    • Promoting transparency and accountability in the justice sector, both from within justice institutions and without (civil society monitoring, etc.)
    • The selection, training, and assessment of justice sector actors, as well as developing next-generation talent
    • Increasing access to justice, particularly for vulnerable and marginalized groups
  • Education: The Foundation's grantmaking in this program area supports projects/programs that improve the access to and quality of secondary education in the region.
  • Sustainable Resource Management: The Tinker Foundation’s work on the environment is focused on efforts that support the sustainable management of habitat and resources and incorporate social and economic dimensions affecting the well-being of local communities.

Funded activities may include, but are not restricted to, community engagement and capacity-building, applied research, measurement and evaluation activities, and workshops and conferences related to the Foundation’s areas of interest. The Foundation welcomes collaboration among organizations in Latin America and prefers to fund institutions that are actively engaged with a broad array of stakeholders impacted by the identified challenge.

Letters of inquiry are reviewed on a rolling basis prior to the deadline for receipt of full proposals. However, you should receive notification of the status no later than two weeks following the letter of inquiry close date.

The sequence of the application process in the online portal is as follows:
- Eligibility Quiz: Organizations that pass the eligibility quiz will proceed to the letter of inquiry section.
- Letter of Inquiry: If your project is of interest, you will be invited to submit a letter of inquiry (LOI). The LOI allows the Foundation to assess the appropriateness of the project and determine if a full proposal is warranted. The Foundation requires a letter of inquiry to limit the time and effort applicants might otherwise spend on preparing a full proposal that is not likely to be supported.
- Full Proposal
