Grants of up to €50,000 to USA, Canada, and International eye care specialists, endorsed by organizations, for initiatives and projects that improve the quality of eye care. Eligible projects are innovative or educational initiatives that address unmet health needs in the fields of ophthalmology and optometry.

Initiatives intended for developing countries, as well as those in developed parts of the world, are warmly welcomed.

Educational and Innovative Initiatives

  • A typical educational example would be: many practicing eye care specialists use vacation time to visit developing countries to provide their skills in cataract clinics. When they leave, their skills and knowledge often leave with them. An idea to improve local training and education for local doctors would have a more sustainable impact.
  • A typical innovative example would be a novel approach to monitoring visual acuity changes through a convenient electronic medium (e.g., the internet).

For more examples of educational and innovative initiatives, see "What is meant by an 'educational or innovative initiative'?" tab on the Frequently Asked Questions page.

Proposed initiatives must demonstrate a clear impact on improving the quality of eye care, as well as long-term viability and sustainability, with outcomes projected within two years. While initiatives do not have to be sustainable from the outset, they must have the goal of becoming self-funded after a defined period. Applicants must provide details of projects that have already been designed and planned.

Initiatives must be at a relatively advanced stage, simply requiring the XOVA funding grant in order to provide education with sustainable impact, and/or innovation in clinical practice. XOVA funding can be part of an ongoing long-term initiative, however the actual project which the XOVA grant would fund must be in the planning phase and not yet started.
